More than a Machine Shop…
Sometimes a photography assignment becomes something more than documenting a building.
I recently had the opportunity to photograph a machine shop that has served our community for more than forty years. As I walked through the shop, it was immediately clear that this wasn't just a business. Every machine, every worn workbench, and every tool represented decades of hard work, skill, and dedication.
As we talked, I learned that the owner and his wife are preparing for a new chapter in life. They are looking forward to traveling together after many years of building both a business and a livelihood.
Before I left, I asked him if I could make one portrait—not because I needed another photograph, but because I wanted to preserve a piece of his story.
I asked him if there was one machine that meant the most to him. Without hesitation, he pointed to his favorite machine. That's where we made the portrait.
Bill by his favorite machine.
For me, that photograph isn't about machinery. It's about a craftsman standing beside something that helped define his life's work. Long after the shop changes hands, I hope that image reminds his family of the man who spent more than four decades doing what he loved.
Photography has a unique way of preserving moments that might otherwise be forgotten. Sometimes the most meaningful photograph isn't the newest building, the latest piece of equipment, or the finished product. Sometimes it's simply a person standing in the place where they built their life.
